The purpose of my research is to investigate on how models and techniques typical of the telecommunication field can be introduced into microfluidics, in order to design microfluidic devices in which flows are switched in a programmable and flexible way. By now, long sequences of operations to be performed on biochemical samples/reagents are often integrated in the same device, which thus has high complex design of the channels. These long sequences of operations on droplets could be separated into atomic operations, each one performed by a single, simple device. The complexity of these devices can be reduced by, for example, introducing devices responsible only for dispatching droplets, among devices which are responsible for few laboratory operations, these latter being simpler than a single, bigger device.
