Droplets flowing inside capillaries develop internal flow and modify the flow of the continuous liquid. This produces a range of interesting effects, including the modification of the speed at which droplet flows, Marangoni effects and modification of the pressure drop along the capillary. The speed at which drops travel depend in a complicated way on the viscosities and interfacial tension between the liquids. We are interested in studying the details of flow at the microscale and in using the speed of the droplet as a sensor of small physico-chemical changes undergoing in the droplet for analytical and diagnostic applications.
